The high cost of having it all

The weird way I’ve designed my life

Today, I don’t have any quick tips. I just want to open up and show you how I’ve built my life, and why my big moment might take significantly longer than most people think it should.

Growing up, the traditional corporate path never made sense to me. But if I’m being honest, it wasn’t for the classic reasons people give when they talk about starting a business. I didn’t have a grand manifesto. The real reason I refused to lock myself into one single path was simple. I genuinely didn’t know who I was or what I wanted to do yet.

I thought it was critical to keep my options open for as long as possible. I wanted the space to discover who I was before the world decided for me.

So, I explored.

I took someone else’s idea in university and built a platform for underground artists. It failed, but more importantly, I realised the limelight and the music space weren’t for me.

I pivoted into running a branding agency, which was really just an excuse to express my creativity and meet incredible people. In fact, some of my closest friends today came from that work. Most people told me to separate my personal life from my work, but I realised they were one and the same. My work has also been the vehicle that allowed me to travel and encounter new cultures.

Over 15 years, that exploration became a deliberate blueprint for my life.

When people look at designing their lives, they usually think they have to make a painful choice:

• Make a lot of money, but hate what you do every day.

• Do what you love, but struggle to pay the bills.

• Run a successful business, but become trapped working inside it 24/7.

I refused to accept those trade-offs. I wanted the complete mix: work I love, great pay, control over my time, businesses that don’t depend on me every day, and the chance to make a real difference in the world.

The price tag for refusing to compromise isn’t money.

It is time.

It takes much longer to build this way. Sometimes, given how my brain works, my ego gets the best of me and asks, “Why aren’t you a multimillionaire yet?” (You could have been years ago)

But then I look at my daily life. I wake up with control over my time, work on projects that energise me, and spend uninterrupted time with my family. Then I remember I’m already living the payoff.

If you’re currently feeling anxious because your progress feels slow, here is the simple three-part system I used to build my life without losing my soul.

The 3 Tools for Life Design

Most people struggle to design their lives because they expect one job or company to do everything: pay the bills, fulfil their passion and leave a legacy.

Though possible, that is asking too much from one thing. Misplaced expectations create disappointment.

Instead, I split my life into three clear tools.

1. The BIG Idea (Your Legacy)

What it is

The project built for big scale, long-term impact and building wealth for your family’s future.

How I build it

For me, this is our technology company, Workspaceglobal.com, connecting global businesses to thousands of creative teams across Africa. In a world full of AI tools, we focus on making sure human talent and African creativity still have a major seat at the table.

The Rule

This tool must be built with good systems, investors and strong teams so it does not require you to do every little task yourself forever.

2. The Heart Project (Your Fuel)

What it is

The work you would do for free for the rest of your life simply because you love it and it helps fix a problem in the world.

How I build it

This is OPENSPACE. I love bringing strangers together for deep, honest conversations in a world where people are constantly arguing or afraid to speak up. It doesn’t need to make sense on a spreadsheet. It just needs to help people.

The Rule

Keep this project away from heavy financial pressure so it stays fun and real.

3. The Daily Craft (Your Income)

What it is

The intersection of what you are naturally great at, what gives you purpose and what people will pay you well for right now.

How I build it

This is my work as a coach and advisor to leaders and entrepreneurs through SydneySam.com. It brings 15 years of real-world experience together to help people think clearly, solve hard problems and live better lives.

The Rule

This is your main engine for earning money and sharing your skills with the world.

How to Build This for Yourself

If you want to look at where you are right now, ask yourself these three simple questions:

• Are you expecting your daily job to do all three roles at once? If you are, you will probably end up burnt out or frustrated.

• Which of the three tools are you ignoring? Are you making good money with your Daily Craft, but completely starving your Heart Project?

• What are you sacrificing for speed? If you are trying to rush your success, what part of your freedom or happiness are you giving up to get there fast?

We’re All Figuring This Out Together

I don’t write this as someone who has everything 100% figured out. As my businesses get bigger, they bring new challenges, more responsibility and constant fine-tuning. There are still days when the slow pace tests my patience.

But I’ve made peace with the clock. I am willing to be patient because this way of living is already working today.

We live in a world obsessed with reaching the finish line instantly, but building a great life is a long, slow experiment. None of us have the full map from day one. We are all testing things out, making mistakes and figuring this out together as we go.

Build yours on your own terms.

If you can, pay the price of patience. Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast.

We all know the goal isn’t simply success.

It’s to build a life you don’t eventually want to escape from.

I hope my story helps.

With love,

Syd
